RE: Truck Camper Living

Was fulltiming for a number of years in a 37 foot 5th wheel with 3 slides as I traveled the country working. Health reasons took me off the road....traded the 5th wheel for a Lance 981Max just for camping. Went back to work and the new company sent me to Alabama for two months.....It was not a long time but I enjoyed the Truck Camper. The only thing I missed was my recliner... I left the camper on the truck and used a company truck to get around but I can see the benefit of having alternate transportation in case you don't want to or not permitted to remove the camper. Looking around for a toad for my next long trip. Storage space is limited as we all know so only the bare essentials are loaded.

RE: How do you carry your bicycles? (other than on the ladder)

I have not tried them but I have seen bike racks that are mounted on both front and rear "receiver hitches". When the camper arrives on site, they take the bikes off and remove the hitches for access to the TC. Worth looking into.....I have towed one of those small trailers and they are "fun" to watch in the rear view camera as they bounce along behind me......
Good Luck...

RE: Springs or Bags

When I was full timing with a 5th Wheel....I added helper springs to level the HD 2500. Later I had to give up full timing and upgraded to a 3500 and downsized to a Lance TC. and with this I added the firestone air bags to stabalize the truck. Both worked fine for me. The airbags were a pain to inflate so I added an on-board compressor and now I can let my laziness shine through.

RE: Toy Hauler to a Truck Camper - Thoughts...***Updated***

Since you asked....LOL. I was full timing for a little over 6 years traveling for work from coast to coast. Had a great time and really liked the life style....Medical problems force me off the road and into bed for two years...when I was up and about, I felt that I need to get something a little easier to deal with....Went looking for a smaller 5th wheel but got side tracked and started to look over the Lance Camper selection. Decided that the TC was the way to go since I thought it would be used for camping and fishing (towing boat) etc.
Got the model with all the accessories I needed and 1 slide. It was roomy and I really enjoyed camping in it. Well my best laid plans went a little astray....got asked to go to for a company and do a little traveling....just got back from my first work camping trip. Traveled from Omaha, NE to Anniston AL....Had a great trip with the TC a lot easier to get through towns, etc. Living in the unit was all that I expected...a little cozy after 37 feet of living space before but I had all that I needed.... The move to down size may not be for everyone, but it seems to have been a good move for me.....

RE: stake pocket tiedowns vs all else

I used the stake pocket tie downs on a number of trucks while transporting my 1150 lb pop-up truck camper. Never had a problem but on my latest vehicle, I added some bolts thru the side of the stake shaft into the tie down....just felt it provided some more insurance. I would never consider securing my Lance 981 max with such a system.
Happy Camping....

RE: Unattended Happijac Deployment

Nothing as serious as your problem....But while sitting in my TC in the driveway, with the legs up and contoller stored in a cabinet, my legs started to move...I could hear them kick in....just for a second or two....enough to get my attention.....at that time, I just passed it off as a passing vehicle transmitting on a radio that just happened to match the one on the remote lift sytem....I may be wrong but at least it put me at ease for the short term....

RE: Overnight stops on the highway

I never used WalMart but I have spent nights at truck stops....I pull in--get fuel and find a spot away from the Trucks (they have to be there--give them a break)Hopped into the 5er--(now a TC) and go to sleep. Never open the slides or make a big scene about being to cheap to find a campground...Just want to take a "Combat" nap and refresh the body and mind.

RE: Do Extended Service policys ever pay a claim?

When I owned my 5er, I tried the extended warranty....no luck getting paid for 3 issues....paid the repairs out of my own pocket....Two things 1. There was always some reason the repair shop did not follow the rules getting authorization.....I was standing right next to the technician and he answered all the questions, got authorization etc....still no payment. The next was the dealers, other than the one I purchased it from would not even try to get an authorization.....Cashed in the remaining policy after a fight got some of my money back.....

Compressor Installation

Just finished mounting a rear view camera on my new Lance...now that my confidence is up....want to add a compressor w/dual gauge to allow me to monitor and add air to my dealer installed Firestone airbag system....Questions that the installation instructions don't adddress are 1. A suggested mounting location and position of the mounted compressor...2. can it be mounted on orientated to the side, upside down or does it have to be mounted upright????? Bet someone on this forum can keep me straight.....
Thanks in advance.....

Lance Camera Wiring

Up to this point the dealer has been great. Now a simple question has them ducking. My 981Max is prewired for a rear view camera. Using a screwdriver as a search tool, I found the camera end of the wiring harness.....I can't locate the monitor end of the wiring harness. When I ask the service tech, he points toward the forward left of the camper and says " It should be in that area"..can anyone help me....
Thanks in advance....

Dealer Installed Rear View Camera

In the dead of winter I decided to trade my 5er in and get a TC. Life style change due to health reasons prompted the change. No more full timing. Did my home work etc and settled on the Lance camper with one slide. After a couple of short trips around town, I feel a rear view camera is needed for safety reasons. The dealer will install a ASA model but I wanted to find out if anyone else went with the camera recommended by Lance and if it is worth the money. Been seaching the RV Net and the various websites and it has added to my confusion as to the best course of action....and finally, is the wiring for these cameras universal. The Lance is prewired for the ASA and it would great to use the same wiring in case I go with another brand.....

Damage to 5th Wheel

Just had to share this with everyone that that hauls or drives a RV down the highway....
While departing a campground, I noticed a number of folks gathered around a fairly new 5th wheel. I had to stop and find out what peaked their interest.
The owner told me he was traveling approximately 60 MPH and felt a slight vibration. As he checked his mirrors, there was an explosion and his 5er lifted off the ground on the driver's side. After a panic stop and examination, he found that a tire had blew out. The damage caused by the blow out was extreme.
Of couse the shroud around the wheel well was damaged, there was a hole in the top of the wheel well about 1 ft square. The force from the blow out travled upward and knocked out all the drawers in the cupboard and continued upward to force the microwave out of it's support stucture. The 5er was about 6-7 months old and he had approximately 5000 miles on the tires which he had 110psi (recommended pressure).
